Dunbeath Heritage Museum

Dunbeath Heritage Museum tells the story of the people of South-East Caithness. On display are artefacts illustrating the unique archaeology of the area, including Prehistoric stone and bronze axes, finds from an Iron Age Broch, a Medieval silver coin hoard, a Pictish stone and much more. It hosts a social history collection reflecting the village’s fishing heritage, the story of locals through the wars, and displays information and artefacts from the Duke of Kent’s tragic 1942 plane crash at Eagle’s Rock. The museum also tells the story of Neil M. Gunn, one of the most important writers of Scottish fiction of the 20th century, who was born in Dunbeath and went to school in the 19th century building which now houses the collection.

Dunbeath Preservation Trust also cares for historic buildings at Dunbeath Harbour, where you can see its storehouses, bothy and ice house, all providing a wonderful commentary on Dunbeath’s own ‘boom’ period during the 19th century’s ‘dash for the fish’.
