Applecross Heritage Centre

The Heritage Centre is operated by the Historical Society over the main visitor months April to October each year. It is manned by local volunteers. We have a broadly based collection of artefacts and information held in a variety of forms dating back to the earliest of times. Applecross is a major centre of early Christianity and the Heritage Centre at Clachan is close to the site of the original monastery dating back to 670. We have a small shop selling a wide range of goods including books.

Taigh Tasgaidh Leanabachd na Gàidhealtachd

Set in charming location in the Victorian spa village of Strathpeffer, the Highland museum of Childhood is based in the old railway station. The museum tells the story of childhood across the Highlands exploring themes such as schools days, crofting life, birth and early years. It is also home to a vast doll collection belonging to local lady, Angela Kellie. On display are also toys and games from different eras which give everyone a chance to reminisce. The museum also has a small gift shop.
We welcome school and other group visits to the museum and The Goods Shed education space.

MHH launches at Gairloch Museum

Dan Cottam speaking at the launch of MHH

This autumn saw the launch of a new charitable organisation created to support the heritage sector in the north of Scotland. Museums and Heritage Highland aims to be a voice for the Highland heritage sector, supporting its members in a range of areas including advocacy, sustainability, audience and workforce development, collections care and collaboration. MHH launches at the recently relocated Gairloch Museums and they were joined at the opening by around 40 people representing over 20 different organisations.

The new organisation evolved from the existing Highland Museums Forum (HMF) in response to the 2017/18 ‘Our Collective Future’ project, funded by Museums Galleries Scotland and Heritage Lottery Fund.  This partnership project included nineteen independent museums from across the Highlands and aimed to address the challenge of funding reduction by finding ways to increase the economic sustainability and future resilience for the sector.

Development Manager Helen Avenell said,

“The heritage sector in the Highlands faces particular challenges and opportunities and the creation of MHH is a response to the growing need for us to work collaboratively with additional support. We hope that Museums and Heritage Highland can develop opportunities to capitalise on collective strengths and skills to build capacity, increasing the profile of Highland heritage and developing a strong advocacy voice for our members.”

Russian Arctic Convoy Museum

Discover one of the most daring allied operations of WWII.

The Arctic Convoys were a monumental collaborative effort to provide aid to the Soviet Union to bolster its defences against the invading German forces. The supplies were delivered by merchant vessels, escorted by warships, and shielded by air cover. The route went through perilous Arctic waters, and the ships sailed under the constant threat of air, surface vessel, and u-boat attacks.

Our museum has a large collection of artefacts and memorabilia, including: ships’ instruments, uniforms, photographs, written accounts, ships’ logs, medals, toys, models, and much more.

West Highland Museum

picture of west highland museum from the outside

West Highland Museum is situated in the heart of Fort William in the Scottish Highlands. The collections tell the story of the region and its history. Our most renowned collections relate to Bonnie Prince Charlie and the Jacobite cause, as well as the Commandos who trained here during World War II.

We also hold a wealth of curious and fascinating collections relating to less well-known aspects of the lives of the people of the West Highlands, from the effects of political warfare, to the economic impact of tourism in the region, and the coming of the industrial and modern age.

Strathnaver Museum

Strathnaver Museum as viewed from the sky

Located in the ancient province of Strathnaver, scene of some of the more brutal acts of the Highland Clearances, it is unsurprising this is the main story told by Strathnaver Museum. From the pulpit which dominates the main room Rev. Mackenzie was obliged to read out eviction notices in 1819. Of particular interest to those of Mackay ancestry is the Clan Mackay Centre on the upper floor of the museum. Don’t miss the impressive Farr Stone, dating from c.850AD, to be found in the graveyard or the Bronze Age Chealamy Beaker. Free maps available: Strathnaver Trail and Rob Donn Trail.
